What is Dunaliella salina?

Dunaliella salina is a single-celled green Micro algae that lives in coastal waters, brine rock pools and salt water lakes. Dunaliella salina has adapted to life in highly concentrated salt water – it is one of the most salt tolerant algae.

Dunaliella salina contains a mixture of natural Carotenoids including extremely high quantities of beta carotene, a deep orange-red pigment. A rich combination of Carotenoids and green chlorophyll give Dunaliella salina its orange-red colour.

Beta Carotene:

Beta-carotene is a red-orange pigment found in algae, plants and fruits, especially Dunaliella, Carrots and colorful vegetables.

The name beta-carotene comes from the Greek beta and Latin carota (carrot). It is the yellow/orange pigment that gives vegetables and fruits their rich colors. H. Wachenroder crystallized beta-carotene from carrot roots in 1831, and came up with the name "carotene". Beta-carotene's chemical formula - C40H56 - was discovered in 1907.

β-Carotene is a strongly-colored red-orange pigment abundant in Dunaliella. It is an organic compound and chemically is classified as a hydrocarbon and specifically as a terpenoid (isoprenoid), reflecting its derivation from isoprene units. Absorption of β-carotene is enhanced if eaten with fats, as carotenes are fat soluble. It is a group of natural chemicals also referred to as carotenoids or carotenes. It is responsible for giving some vegetables and fruits its vivid orange pigment.

Beta carotene is the main source for vitamin A in the human body. The beta-carotene molecule appears into the trans and cis-isomer.



Provitamin A activity

Dunaliella carotenoids are the primary dietary source of provitamin A worldwide, with β-carotene as the most well-known provitamin A carotenoid. Carotenoid absorption is restricted to the duodenum of the small intestine and dependent on Class B scavenger receptor (SR-B1) membrane protein, which are also responsible for the absorption of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol). One molecule of β-carotene can be cleaved by the intestinal enzyme beta,beta-carotene 15,15'-monooxygenase into two molecules of vitamin A.

Absorption efficiency is estimated to be between 9–22%. The absorption and conversion of Carotenoids may depend on the form that the β-carotene is in the intake of fats and oils at the same time, and the current stores of vitamin A and β-carotene in the body.

Dunaliella salina phytoplankton also contains other vitamins, amino acids, and minerals such as selenium, sulphur and magnesium that aid in detoxification.

Basic information

Theoretically, one molecule of beta-carotene can be cleaved into two molecules of vitamin A (Figure 2). However, inside the body, beta-carotene is only partially converted to vitamin A and the rest is stored as such. Furthermore, the proportion of beta-carotene converted to vitamin A in the body is controlled by the vitamin A status and thus it cannot cause vitamin A hypervitaminosis in humans. Currently available evidence suggests that in addition to being a safe source of vitamin A, beta-carotene plays many important biological roles that may be independent of its provitamin status.



Measurement/conversion factors

Traditionally, vitamin A activity of beta-carotene has been expressed in International Units (IU; 1 IU = 0.60 µg of all-trans beta-carotene). However, this conversion factor does not take into account the poor bioavailability of carotenoids in humans. Thus, FAO/WHO Expert Committee proposed that vitamin A activity be expressed as retinol equivalent (RE).

STABILITY

Carotenoids can lose some of their activity in foods during storage due to the action of enzymes and exposure to light and oxygen.

STORAGE CONDITION:

This material is to be stored in a tightly sealed bag/container and to be kept in a cool place away from moisture and direct sunlight.

This is to certify that this product complies with all relevant current UK and EU Legislative requirements in regard to Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy (TSE) and Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) for human food, and so is free of TSE/BSE.

This is also to certify that, during the course of their manufacture, the above-mentioned product did not come into contact with any materials, which could be derived from TSE/BSE risk materials.
